Kaltern and surroundings

The Kalterersee and the surrounding area offer many opportunities for sports and leisure activities. The St. Josefhof is also an ideal starting point for cycling and hiking tours.

Hikes

The local mountain of Kaltern, the Mendel, can be climbed by foot, by bicycle, by car or by the longest and steepest funicular railway in Europe.

The Mendelbahn, negotiates a difference in altitude of 850m with a slope of 64% in 12 minutes.

The gorge between Altenburg and Lake Caldaro is called Rastenbachklamm. The gorge can be crossed through stairs and bridges. Hiking time is about 2 hours.

The famous mountain “Rosengarten”, in the South Tyrolean Dolomites, also offers many challenges for alpine hikers.

In winter, the surrounding ski slopes, which can be reached by car or bus, are beautiful.

Bike tours

South Tyrol is a little paradise for cyclists. Whole of South Tyrol is connected with cycle paths, which take you to many of the most beautiful places in South Tyrol.

In addition to the bike path along the Etsch, you can also use agricultural trails and and forest trails.

Lake holiday

In summer, the Kalterersee (the warmest bathing lake in the Alps) invites you for a refreshing swim, surf or boating.

The two Lakes of Montiggl in the neighboring village of Eppan invite you to refresh yourself with the longest water slide in South Tyrol.

You can reach the center of Kaltern by car in about 10 minutes, where you can spend your vacation time by shopping, eating or drinking a coffee.
